Heat Only Travels One Way Without One

Lights, return pumps and a warm room all put heat into an aquarium, and nothing takes it back out on its own. A chiller draws tank water through a heat exchanger and moves that heat into the room instead. Reef tanks under intense lighting, small volumes that swing with the weather, and coldwater or temperate setups are the usual reasons to fit one.

Sizing and Installing

• A rated capacity assumes a modest temperature drop. The same unit handles far less water when asked to pull further below room temperature.
• Add the heat your return pump and lighting contribute — tank volume on its own undersizes the job.
• Check the electrical requirement on the listing. Larger units may need a dedicated circuit.
• Every chiller needs its own feed pump and clear air space around the exhaust.
