Reef Octopus Skimmers

Reef Octopus protein skimmers are listed here in five ranges. Classic covers the 110-S, 150-S, 152-S and 202-S along with the INT-150 and the NWB-110. Elite runs 150, 200 and 220. Regal is the widest, reaching from 150 up to 300. SRO uses four-digit numbers instead, the 3000, 5000 and 6000. Apart from those sit the hang-on units, the 100-HOB, 1000-HOB and 2000-HOB, which mount on the back glass rather than standing in a sump. The five ranges

Five names run through the Reef Octopus listing: Classic, Elite, Regal, SRO and the HOB hang-on units. Classic and Elite each cover a handful of sizes, Regal spans the widest set of numbers from 150 through to 300, and SRO switches to four-digit numbering with the 3000, 5000 and 6000. None of these figures is a tank capacity - they are model designations, so match them against the specification of the unit rather than reading them as gallons or litres.

Reading the suffix

  • INT marks the in-sump build, meant to stand inside the sump.
  • HOB marks a hang-on unit that mounts on the back glass, for systems run without a sump.
  • EXT, SSS and NWB appear on further builds of the same numbers, which is why the printed code identifies the unit rather than the number alone.

Choosing between the sizes

Skimmer sizing follows the bioload a system actually carries rather than water volume alone, which is why a lightly stocked large tank and a heavily stocked medium one can land on the same model. Space counts as well: an in-sump unit has to suit both the footprint and the working water depth of the chamber it goes into. Measure that chamber before settling between two adjacent sizes.
