The adapters and strainers that finish a plumbing run. Bulkhead barb adapters convert a bulkhead to flexible hose in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch, with 90 degree versions for tight cabinets, and threaded barb adapters do the same job from a threaded port. Intake strainers cover drains and pump inlets, including threaded strainer fittings from 1/2 inch to 2 inch and Lifegard low profile strainers in slip and MPT versions. Match the barb to the inside diameter of your tubing and the thread or socket to the fitting it screws into.

Barb adapters

A barb adapter is what lets flexible hose meet rigid plumbing. Straight versions run the hose away from the bulkhead in line; 90 degree versions turn it immediately, which matters in a cramped stand where a hose cannot make a wide bend without kinking. Threaded barb adapters do the same from any female threaded port rather than specifically from a bulkhead.

Strainers

Strainers keep livestock and debris out of drains and pump intakes.
Low profile versions sit closer to the glass where clearance is tight.
Slip versions bond to pipe; MPT versions screw into a female thread.
A blocked strainer starves the pump, so they need checking on the same schedule as filter socks.

Getting the sizes right

Two measurements matter and they are not the same: the barb is sized to the inside diameter of the tubing sliding over it, and the threaded or slip end is sized to the fitting it joins. A 3/4 inch barb adapter and 3/4 inch tubing go together; a 3/4 inch bulkhead does not automatically take 3/4 inch hose. Check both ends before ordering.
