Not All Silicone Is Aquarium Safe

Hardware-store silicone often contains mildewcides and anti-fungal additives that leach into water and kill livestock. Aquarium-grade silicone is 100% RTV silicone with nothing added — that distinction matters more than brand or price when the seal is holding back water over a fish room floor.

Clear or Black, and How Much

• Clear — the default for repairs on standard glass tanks, and for seams you'd rather not draw attention to.
• Black — hides algae and detritus along the seam and gives a cleaner look on rimless and starphire builds.
• Cartridge sizes — 10oz cartridges for full reseals and larger jobs; 3oz squeeze tubes for small repairs and touch-ups.

Silicone bonds to glass, not to acrylic — use an acrylic-specific solvent cement for acrylic tanks. Surfaces must be bone dry and free of old silicone residue, and full cure takes several days before adding water. Questions? Email info@jlaquatics.com.
