Hands Out of the Water

Most of what goes wrong at arm's length in an aquarium is avoidable. Skin oils, soap residue and hand lotion all end up in the water, a deep tank guarantees a wet shoulder, and a startled fish chased with cupped hands does neither of you any good. Nets, tongs and tweezers keep the job at the end of a handle, which is easier on the livestock and considerably less messy for you.

• Aquarium tongs and grabbers — roughly 20 to 32 inches of reach, for placing rock, retrieving dropped items and spot feeding.

Choosing and Using

• Measure tank depth, not tank length. Reach from the rim to the substrate is what decides the tong length you need.
• A wider net catches faster, but only if it clears the aquascape. Two sizes covers most tanks.
• Wet a net before use and move it slowly — herding a fish into a stationary net works better than chasing.
• Keep a separate net for the quarantine tank, and dry tools between systems.
