API Test Kits

API's liquid test kits and strips, covering freshwater, saltwater and reef tanks. Three master kits group the common tests into one box - Freshwater, Saltwater and Reef - and single kits cover ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, calcium, alkalinity and GH/KH, with pH split into a low-range freshwater kit and a high-range marine one. Master kits and single tests

API's master kits bundle the parameters most tanks need into one box, in Freshwater, Saltwater and Reef versions. The single kits exist because reagents run out at different rates — nitrate gets tested far more often than calcium in most freshwater tanks, and the reverse is true on a reef. Buying a master kit first and replacing individual tests as they empty is the pattern most aquarists end up with.

Liquid tests and strips

  • Liquid kits use reagents, a vial and a colour chart.
  • Strips are dipped and read against the label, with nothing to measure.
  • A 5-in-1 strip and a dedicated ammonia strip are stocked.
  • Reagent bottles carry batch dates — old reagents are a common cause of odd readings.

Testing a new tank

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are the three that matter while a tank is cycling, and all three appear in the freshwater and saltwater master kits. Once a system is established, testing shifts toward whatever you are dosing or controlling: phosphate and nitrate on a reef, GH and KH in planted or hard-water tanks. Follow the timing on each test exactly, since reading a colour early or late is the most frequent source of a wrong result.
