Light the Sump, Export the Nutrient

A refugium works by growing macroalgae that take up nitrate and phosphate, which you then harvest and throw away. None of that happens without light over the chamber, and refugium fixtures are built for that specific job — spectrum aimed at algae growth rather than coral colour.

• Flat-mount lights — sit above the refugium on a flat surface or bracket.

Reverse the photoperiod where you can: refugium lit while the display is dark. That tends to hold pH steadier across the day, because the macroalgae keep consuming CO2 overnight when the display has stopped photosynthesising.
