Bulkheads

Bulkhead fittings for drilled tanks, sumps and reservoirs, in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Three styles are stocked: standard threaded, double threaded for a threaded connection on both sides, and slip for solvent-welded pipe. Slip bulkhead kits pair the bulkhead with the parts needed to finish the run. Bulkhead size refers to the plumbing it accepts, not the hole in the glass, so check the required hole diameter for the size you need before drilling.

Threaded, double threaded or slip

Standard threaded bulkheads take a threaded fitting on one side and are the common choice for a drain or return where an adapter, strainer or elbow screws in. Double threaded versions accept threads on both sides, which suits a run that has to be dismantled from either direction. Slip bulkheads are made for rigid PVC pipe solvent-welded straight into the socket, giving a permanent joint with no thread to seal.

Sizing and installation

  • The stated size is the pipe size the bulkhead accepts, not the hole it needs.
  • The gasket goes on the wet side of the glass, with the flange inside the tank.
  • Hand-tighten the nut and add only a small amount past that - overtightening cracks glass.
  • Thread tape or sealant belongs on threads only, never against the gasket face.

What pairs with them

Barb adapters, elbows and strainers thread or slip into the bulkhead once it is fitted, and hose clamps hold flexible line onto a barb. Keep a spare gasket on hand if the tank is already running, since a gasket that has been compressed for years rarely reseats as well the second time.
