Give the Cutting Something to Grow Onto

A frag needs a base it can encrust before it will do much else. Shape decides how it sits and how easily you can move it later: a stemmed plug drops into egg crate or a rack hole, while a flat disc or tile sits directly on rock or sand.

Shapes and Materials

Stemmed plugs — 3/8 inch stems with a standard or wide crown, sized to fit standard egg crate.
Discs — round bases from roughly 1-1/4 inch up to 3 inch, for corals with a broad encrusting foot.
Tiles — square bases in small and large sizes.
Flat limestone bases — heavier footings that sit stably on the aquarium bottom, or bury in sand.
Materials — fused reef-sand mounts, and fired ceramic where you want a harder base.
Pack sizes — 10, 15, 20, 25 and 100-piece packs, for a single session or a propagation bench.

Ceramic mounts ship dry and need no curing. Sand-based mounts are usually rinsed and soaked in tank water before anything is glued to them. Either way, mount to the shape you will want to handle in six months, not just the one that is easiest today. Questions? Email info@jlaquatics.com.
