Choosing a ReefControl head unit

ReefControl comes in three versions: the ReefControl Lite, the ReefControl Pro and the ReefControl Pro DLX Kit. The head unit is the hub every probe, power bar and module connects to, and each version supports a different amount of add-on hardware. Settle on the head unit first, then check its product page for what it will take.

ReefSense probes

• Temperature probe, the starting point for any controlled tank.
• Salinity and temperature probe, for keeping salinity logged between manual checks.
• pH and temperature probe, useful on reef tanks running a calcium reactor or kalkwasser.
• ORP probe, for keepers running ozone; paired with a Power 8, the ORP reading can switch the ozonizer.

Calibration is stored on each ReefSense probe rather than in the controller, so a calibrated probe can move to another compatible head unit without starting over.

Power, top-off and add-ons

• Power 8 and Power 8 Deluxe bring mains equipment under the controller, so a probe reading can switch a heater, fan or ozonizer.
• The ATO module runs top-off from the controller itself on supported head units, using its own level sensor and DC pump.
• A 4-port expander adds ReefSense connections once the head unit's own are spoken for.
• The leak detector sits on the cabinet floor, where a failed fitting shows up first.
• Single and magnetic four-probe holders and a titanium grounding probe finish off the sump.

Set up and monitored in ReefBeat

ReefControl is configured through Red Sea's ReefBeat app: probe calibration, acceptable ranges, notifications, graphs of recent readings, and the rules that let a reading switch equipment.

Starting from nothing, a head unit with temperature and pH covers the essentials; salinity and ORP can follow as the tank matures.
