The Foundation Everything Else Sits On

Salt mix sets your baseline. Every parameter you subsequently test, dose and correct starts from whatever the mix delivered, so switching brands mid-stream means switching baselines — usually the reason a stable tank suddenly reads differently after a water change.

Choosing a Mix

  • Standard marine mixes — formulated for fish-only and general marine systems.
  • Enhanced reef formulas — elevated calcium, alkalinity and magnesium aimed at stony coral growth.
  • Box sizes — 50 to 200 gallon mixes, the practical option for most home systems.
  • Buckets — resealable, and easier to keep dry in a damp fishroom.

Mix in RO or RO/DI water, not tap, and give it time. Salt needs to dissolve fully and the water needs to reach temperature before it goes anywhere near livestock — a mix used too soon can read high on alkalinity and drop as it settles. Keep the container sealed between uses; salt mix pulls moisture from the air and a clumped bucket doses unevenly. Test a new batch before you trust it. Questions? Email info@jlaquatics.com.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
