UV Only Acts on What Passes Through It

A UV sterilizer treats the water inside its chamber and nothing else. Organisms carried past the lamp get a dose; anything living on rock, glass or a fish does not. That one fact explains most disappointment with UV — it is a water-treatment device rather than a tank treatment, and it is sized by flow.

Getting the Dose Right

Flow rate is the dial. Faster flow means less contact time, and the manufacturer's rated flow is what the wattage assumes.
Bulbs fade long before they fail. Output drops while the lamp still lights, so replace on the maker's schedule rather than waiting for darkness.
Keep the quartz sleeve clean — a film on the sleeve stops UV before it ever reaches the water.
UV light damages eyes and skin. Never run a lamp outside its housing.
