Product Description
Lifegard Pro-Max UV Sterilizer - 90 Watt
The Lifegard Pro-Max UV Sterilizer - 90 Watt is a high-capacity 3 inch housing amalgam UV sterilizer for large freshwater or saltwater aquarium systems that need strong UV exposure and high-flow plumbing flexibility.
90 Watt Pro-Max UV for Large Aquarium Systems
The 90 watt Pro-Max is designed for larger aquarium installations where UV sizing, flow planning, and service access matter. Its high-output amalgam bulb, 2 inch union ports, and angled flow-through housing make it a strong option for large sumps, fish systems, and equipment rooms where a compact low-wattage UV sterilizer would not provide enough capacity.
Lifegard Pro-Max 90 Watt Features
- High-output amalgam UV system: The 90 watt model uses an amalgam germicidal UV bulb for strong UV output in larger compatible systems.
- UL Listed day-counter ballast: The amalgam ballast includes a replacement countdown feature to help track bulb service timing.
- Patent-pending flow-through housing: Angled inlet and outlet ports reduce plumbing restriction and can simplify installation in tight spaces.
- Multiple installation positions: The housing can be positioned in different orientations to better fit new or replacement UV setups.
- Internal protective sleeve: The replaceable internal sleeve protects the body from UV exposure and supports regular maintenance.
- Large 2 inch unions: The 2 inch inlet and outlet unions support high-flow installations and make service access more practical.
- 30 PSI maximum operating pressure: The sterilizer is rated for pressurized operation within the manufacturer’s listed limit.
- 9,000 hour effective lamp life: Lamp useful effective life is listed at 9,000 hours under the stated conditions.

Flow Rate and UV Exposure Notes
The listed maximum flow rate is based on new lamp conditions and incorporates a 90% UV transmittance factor. For protozoa exposure at 180,000 uW/cm2, Lifegard/J&L guidance says to reduce the flow rate by a minimum of one sixth and monitor system temperature carefully, because very low flow may create extra heat that can damage the UV unit or system.
Large-System Installation Planning
Plan the 90 watt Pro-Max around the real flow rate through the sterilizer after head height, plumbing length, fittings, valves, and equipment restrictions are considered. The 2 inch unions are useful for high-flow plumbing, but smaller aquarium systems may need appropriate reducers or adapters. Leave enough clearance for quartz sleeve access, bulb replacement, and annual internal sleeve service.
Setup and Service Directions
Assemble the sterilizer with the quartz sleeve, required gaskets, UV bulb, and ballast following the Lifegard instructions. Confirm the unit is fully sealed and water is flowing before powering the UV lamp. Use a GFCI-protected outlet, create a drip loop, never expose eyes or skin to direct UV light, and replace the lamp at the recommended interval so the sterilizer continues delivering effective UV performance.
