Ball valves versus gate valves

A ball valve is built for on and off. Running one part-open to throttle flow wears the seat unevenly and gives poor control near the closed position. A gate valve moves gradually across its whole travel, which is why skimmer outlets and drain lines are usually gated rather than balled. True union bodies on both types let the valve be unscrewed from the pipework for cleaning or replacement without cutting anything.

Check valves and clamps

  • Swing check valves go on return lines to limit back-siphoning when a pump stops.
  • A check valve is a backup, not a substitute for a properly placed return nozzle.
  • Plastic clamps suit submerged and low-pressure joints and will not corrode.
  • Stainless clamps grip harder and are better outside the water, on canister and pump hose.

Sizing

Valve sizes refer to the pipe or hose they connect to. Barbed valves are matched to the inside diameter of flexible tubing; PVC valves are matched to pipe size and to the socket type, slip or threaded. Confirm which end type you need before ordering, since the same nominal size comes in both.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
