What the Regulator Actually Controls

A CO2 cylinder sits at very high pressure. The regulator steps that down to a working pressure your diffuser can handle, and the needle valve then meters the flow bubble by bubble. Get either wrong and you either see no CO2 at all or a sudden dump — which is the scenario that kills fish overnight.

Regulator or Complete Package

  • Complete packages — cylinder, regulator and needle valve supplied together, so the fittings are known to match.
  • Solenoid packages — add an electrically operated valve so CO2 shuts off with your lights, saving gas and avoiding an overnight pH crash.
  • Standalone regulators — dual-gauge units showing both cylinder and working pressure, plus electronic models for finer control.

If you plan to run CO2 on a timer, buy the solenoid version from the start rather than retrofitting one. Refillable cylinders ship as dangerous goods when full, so check refill options locally. Questions? Email info@jlaquatics.com.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
