Gentle Filtration Where Suction Is a Hazard

A sponge filter pulls water through foam that houses bacteria, giving biological and mechanical filtration with almost no pull at the intake. That is the whole point in a fry tank, a shrimp tank or a quarantine setup, where an intake strong enough to be useful is also strong enough to be a danger to what you are trying to raise.

Using and Cleaning Them

  • Most sponge filters run on an air pump and airline, both sold separately - check the product page for what a given model needs.
  • Rinse the sponge in water taken out during a water change. Tap water kills the bacteria doing the work.
  • Squeeze rather than scrub, and only when flow drops. A slightly dirty sponge filters better than a spotless one.
  • Two small filters beat one large one in a breeding tank, because you can move one across fully seeded when the next tank goes up.
