Gyres and powerheads

A gyre pump uses a long cross-flow rotor to move a broad sheet of water along the tank, which suits displays where dead spots form behind rock. A conventional powerhead pushes a narrower stream from a single nozzle and is easier to aim at a specific area. Hygger lists both: the 5000, 7000 and 9000 gyres for tank-wide movement, and the 360 Mini and Mini powerheads for targeted flow in smaller volumes.

Placing a pump

Rated flow figures come from open-water testing, and the number on the box is not what reaches the far corner of a rock-filled tank. Mount a gyre along the back glass so its output runs the length of the display, and keep a powerhead clear of the substrate to avoid stirring sand into the water column. On tanks holding fish that dislike strong current, a double unit split across two areas is often gentler than one large pump.
