Collection: Salifert Test Kits

Salifert's test kits in two ranges. The marine and reef side covers calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, pH, potassium, copper, silicate and iodide, so most reef parameters can be tracked without moving between brands. The freshwater range is separate and covers ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, pH, KH and GH. Kits are sold individually rather than as bundles, which suits building up only the tests your system actually needs. Check whether a kit is the marine or freshwater version before ordering - several parameters appear in both ranges.

Two separate ranges

Salifert kits come in a marine and reef line and a separate freshwater line, and several parameters exist in both — ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and pH all appear twice under near-identical names. The kits are not interchangeable, so the first thing to check on this page is which version you are picking up. The marine range is the broader of the two, running from calcium and alkalinity through to potassium, copper, silicate and iodide.

Building a testing routine

  • Kits are sold individually, so you buy only the parameters you actually track.
  • Reef systems usually start with calcium, alkalinity and magnesium.
  • Nitrate and phosphate follow for anyone managing nutrients.
  • Copper is used when treating a quarantine system rather than a display.

Getting reliable numbers

Most Salifert kits are titration based — reagent is added a drop at a time until the sample changes colour, and the count gives the reading. That makes the result sensitive to how steadily you add reagent and how carefully you judge the colour change, so work in good light and take your time. Note the date a kit is opened; reagents do not last indefinitely once in use.
