Product Description
Lifegard Pro-Max UV Sterilizer - 55 Watt
The Lifegard Pro-Max UV Sterilizer - 55 Watt is a 3 inch housing high-output amalgam UV sterilizer for larger freshwater or saltwater aquariums that need strong UV capacity with flexible plumbing options.
55 Watt Pro-Max Amalgam UV Sterilization
This 55 watt model moves into Lifegard’s amalgam Pro-Max range, offering a stronger UV option for aquarium systems that need higher flow capacity than compact UV sterilizers can provide. Its angled flow-through body is designed to reduce restrictive plumbing and make the sterilizer easier to fit into tight stand, sump, or equipment-room layouts.
Lifegard Pro-Max 55 Watt Features
- Amalgam UV bulb system: The 55 watt model uses an amalgam germicidal UV bulb and compatible amalgam ballast for higher-output Pro-Max operation.
- Day-counter ballast: The UL Listed ballast includes a counter to help track when the bulb is due for replacement.
- Patent-pending flow-through design: Angled inlet and outlet ports help reduce plumbing restriction and simplify installation compared with more traditional UV layouts.
- Multiple positioning options: The body can be oriented in different ways to suit new installations, replacement systems, and tight equipment spaces.
- Internal protective sleeve: The replaceable internal sleeve helps protect the housing from UV exposure as part of annual service.
- 2 inch union connections: Large union inlet and outlet fittings support higher-flow plumbing and easier maintenance access.
- 30 PSI pressure rating: The unit is designed for use within the manufacturer’s maximum operating pressure limit.
- 9,000 hour effective lamp life: The useful effective UV lamp life is listed at 9,000 hours under the stated conditions.

Flow Rate and UV Exposure Notes
The maximum flow rating is based on new lamp conditions and incorporates a 90% UV transmittance factor. For protozoa exposure at 180,000 uW/cm2, Lifegard/J&L guidance says to reduce the flow rate by a minimum of one sixth and monitor temperature carefully, as very low flow can create extra heat that may damage the UV unit or system.
Aquarium Installation Planning
The 55 watt Pro-Max is best planned as an inline UV sterilizer with enough pump capacity to deliver the desired flow after head pressure, valves, elbows, and plumbing friction are considered. Use compatible adapters if connecting to smaller plumbing, keep the unions accessible, and leave room for bulb and quartz sleeve service.
Setup and Service Directions
Install the quartz sleeve, gaskets, UV bulb, and ballast according to the Lifegard instructions before starting the unit. Confirm all seals are seated properly and the housing is leak-free before powering the UV lamp. Use a GFCI-protected outlet, create a drip loop, never look directly at UV light, and replace the bulb at the recommended interval to maintain effective UV output.
