Export Before It Breaks Down

A protein skimmer strips dissolved organics out of saltwater before bacteria mineralise them into nitrate and phosphate. Air injected into a column of water carries those compounds up as foam and into the collection cup, where they leave the system for good. It is one of the few pieces of filtration that removes waste from a tank rather than storing it until the media is changed.

Choosing and Tuning

Check footprint and body height against your sump first. A rated capacity is no use if the unit will not clear the stand opening.
Capacity ratings assume moderate stocking. Heavy feeding, or a tank of large fish, is a reason to size up rather than buy to the number.
Expect a break-in period — a new skimmer foams erratically for the first week or two before it settles.
Keep the neck clean. Film on the inside of the neck changes how foam climbs more than most people expect.
