IceCap In-Sump UV Sterilizer - 27 Watt
The IceCap In-Sump UV Sterilizer - 27 Watt is a mid-size drop-in UV sterilizer for freshwater and saltwater aquariums that need stronger UV capacity than the 18 watt model while still avoiding permanent plumbing. With an included EVO 1000 feed pump, high-output 27W UV lamp, and in-sump design, it helps improve water clarity and reduce free-floating algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and parasite pressure as water passes through the sterilizer chamber.
Mid-Size IceCap 27W In-Sump UV Overview
More capacity for larger aquariums: The 27 watt IceCap In-Sump UV Sterilizer is rated for marine aquariums up to 140 gallons and freshwater systems up to 1300 gallons. It gives hobbyists a stronger drop-in UV option for reef tanks, fish-only saltwater aquariums, larger freshwater displays, and sump systems where inline plumbing is not preferred.
Matched pump and UV chamber: The included EVO 1000 feed pump is paired with the UV vessel so the system is easier to install than a traditional UV setup that requires separate pump sizing. This makes the unit practical for customers who want UV support without building a dedicated hard-plumbed loop.
Controlled water-column clarification: When properly installed and maintained, the UV lamp irradiates suspended organisms as they pass through the chamber. This can help reduce green water, improve clarity, and support fish health as part of a broader aquarium maintenance and disease-management plan.
27 Watt In-Sump UV Features
- Drop-in sump installation: Designed to sit directly in a sump chamber without permanent plumbing.
- EVO 1000 pump included: The matched feed pump is supplied for plug-and-play operation.
- Higher capacity than the 18W model: Suitable for larger marine and freshwater systems that need stronger UV support.
- High-output UV ballast: Reliable ballast operation supports the included high-output UV lamp.
- Directional output plumbing: The included down pipe and elbow help guide the treated water output inside the sump.
- Freshwater and saltwater compatible: Can be used in reef, fish-only marine, freshwater, and larger aquarium filtration layouts.
- No display disruption: The unit operates in the sump so it does not add bulky hardware inside the main display aquarium.
- Serviceable core parts: The lamp and quartz sleeve are replaceable for long-term maintenance.

27W In-Sump UV Compatibility Notes
Electrical components must stay dry: The IceCap In-Sump UV Sterilizer - 27 Watt is not fully submersible. Install it so the top electrical portion remains above the highest possible sump water level, including when return pumps shut off. The ballast and power components must be mounted away from moisture, splash, salt creep, and standing water.
Use flow rate intentionally: CoralVue guidance separates bacteria and algae flow from parasite-focused flow. For algae and bacteria control, the flow rate can be higher; for parasites, slower flow provides longer exposure time. Actual results depend on flow, aquarium volume, organism type, lamp condition, quartz sleeve cleanliness, and overall system management.
Leave room for service: Confirm enough vertical and side clearance for removing the vessel cover, lamp, sleeve, and output plumbing. The lamp and quartz sleeve are fragile and should be handled carefully during inspection or replacement.
Setting Up the IceCap 27W In-Sump UV Sterilizer
Assemble the UV vessel, install the feed pump, insert the quartz sleeve carefully, connect the UV lamp to the socket, and thread the ballast nut by hand. Install the down pipe and directional output elbow without glue, then place the assembled unit upright in the sump. Power the feed pump first to confirm water movement and check for leaks. Once operation is stable, connect the UV ballast to a GFCI-protected outlet and verify the status indicator. Always unplug the unit before cleaning or service and never handle or stare at an operating UV lamp.
