Collection: Substrates & Decor

Substrate and hardscape — reef sand, dry base and reef rock, planted aqua soil, and aquascaping wood to build your aquarium's foundation. Substrate and rock are the hardest things to change once a tank is running.

The Foundation of Your Tank

Substrate and rock aren't just looks — they shape your tank's chemistry and biology. Aragonite sand buffers a reef's pH; planted aqua soils feed root systems and lower pH for plants and shrimp; porous reef rock becomes home to the bacteria that run your nitrogen cycle. Getting the foundation right makes everything above it easier. We carry substrate and rock from Caribsea, Marco Rocks, Fluval, and Seachem.

What's in This Collection

  • Marine sand — aragonite live and dry sand that buffers reef pH and alkalinity.
  • Planted substrates — nutrient-rich aqua soils for plant and shrimp tanks.
  • Base & reef rock — dry, pest-free rock to build reef aquascapes.
  • Freshwater gravel & stone — inert gravels and natural stone for freshwater layouts.
  • Hardscape wood & kits — driftwood and aquascaping mortar to shape your scape.

Rinse inert gravels before use, and cycle dry rock and live sand fully before adding livestock. Plan your rockwork before you add water — it's far easier dry. Email info@jlaquatics.com for help. J&L has served Canadian aquascapers since 1997.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
