Red Sea Reef-Frame 170 - White Cabinet
The Red Sea Reef-Frame 170 - White Cabinet combines a 136 litre (35.9 US gallon) ultra-clear glass aquarium with a 39 litre (10.3 US gallon) filtration sump and reinforced white marine-spec cabinet. Designed for a custom marine reef setup, this 174 litre (46.2 US gallon) system offers the advantages of separate sump filtration within a 60 cm (23.6 inch) aquarium length.
Its eurobraced glass construction, precision ReefGate valve, enlarged downflow inlet, removable overflow combs, and ReefMat-ready filtration section provide the structural and water-management foundation for a personalized reef aquarium. The white cabinet creates a bright furniture-style appearance, while lighting, return pump, skimmer, circulation, and additional control equipment can be chosen independently.
Red Sea Reef-Frame 170 White Cabinet and Glass Design
- Compact aquarium with separate sump: Filtration operates beneath the display instead of occupying valuable space along the back of the aquarium.
- Ultra-clear front glass: The 10 mm low-iron front panel offers improved viewing clarity, helping preserve the visual appearance of fish, corals, and rockwork.
- Structural eurobracing: The glass is reinforced around its upper perimeter and bonded using Red Sea's high-quality euro-silicone.
- White marine-spec plywood: The cabinet supports the aquarium's full perimeter and features splash-resistant doors, stainless steel hinges, and heavy-duty adjustable leveling feet.
- 53 cm (20.9 inch) display depth: The aquarium provides room for rock islands and layered coral placement within a relatively short 60 cm (23.6 inch) footprint.
Surface Skimming and Precision-Controlled Drainage
The central overflow collects aquarium surface water through removable combs and directs it down to the sump. An enlarged rectangular drain inlet reduces turbulence, while the ReefGate valve allows the water level inside the overflow to be adjusted for quieter operation.
- High-precision ReefGate: Fine valve adjustments help balance the drain against the selected return pump and maintain the correct operating level inside the overflow.
- Removable overflow combs: Individual sections can be cleaned to remove deposits that interfere with surface-water collection.
- Dual-path drainage: The overflow incorporates a regulated main downpipe and secondary bypass pipe as part of its water-management system.
- Curved 25 mm return outlet: The single outlet directs water from the sump back into the aquarium. Optional metric and USA connection kits support customized plumbing arrangements.
REEF-SPEC Filtration and Equipment Fitment
The included sump provides a separate filtration area with a removable 225-micron mechanical filter bag and a ReefMat-ready compartment. A bubble-trap section with coarse sponge helps prevent air bubbles from returning to the display through the circulation pump.
- Manual mechanical filtration: The supplied filter bag collects particles and detritus carried through the overflow. It can be removed for cleaning or replacement.
- Optional automated filtration: The filter tray and removable divider can be taken out to accommodate compatible Red Sea roller filtration.
- Skimmer selection: The 170 does not feature an adjustable-height skimmer chamber, so the chosen skimmer must suit the available sump space and operating depth.
- Top-off planning: An automatic top-off system is recommended because evaporation lowers the water level in the sump's return pump compartment, affecting operating stability and salinity.
- Equipment selection: This standard bare system does not include lighting, a return pump, protein skimmer, or ReefControl automation package.
Choosing the REEF-FRAME 170 for a Smaller Reef
The 170 provides a compact platform for carefully planned marine fish, soft coral, LPS, and mixed reef displays when equipped to meet the needs of the chosen livestock. Its main distinction from the REEF-FRAME 250 is the shorter aquarium and simpler sump rather than its cabinet finish.
- Lighting footprint: Choose lighting suitable for a 60 x 53 cm (23.6 x 20.9 inch) display and the intended coral requirements.
- Recommended return pump: Red Sea lists one ReefRun G2 4000, providing an adjustable 2,000-4,000 L/h (530-1,060 US gph) flow range. It is sold separately.
- Supplementary flow: Wavemakers can provide circulation around the aquascape independently of the sump return.
- Compared with the 250: The 250 adds 30 cm (11.8 inches) of aquarium length, an adjustable skimmer chamber, and optional refugium-divider compatibility.
- Cabinet finish: The white version shares its aquarium, sump, and plumbing specifications with the black and oak REEF-FRAME 170 configurations.

- Install the supplied sump and plumbing, ensuring that connector O-rings are correctly seated. Hand-tighten plumbing connections without tools.
- Install the return pump and selected filtration equipment before filling, then follow Red Sea's initial-fill and plumbing leak-inspection procedure.
- Adjust the ReefGate valve gradually and allow the water level to stabilize after each adjustment.
- Perform a power-out test to ensure the sump has sufficient spare capacity when circulation stops.
- Clean the mechanical filter bag, surface-skimming combs, and return nozzle during routine maintenance.
