Hanna Freshwater Alkalinity Checker
The Hanna Freshwater Alkalinity Checker HI775 is a handheld colorimeter for measuring alkalinity from 0 to 500 ppm as CaCO3 in freshwater. It provides a direct digital result for checking buffering capacity, helping freshwater aquarists understand how stable their aquarium water is against pH swings.
HI775 Freshwater Alkalinity Testing
Freshwater alkalinity represents the water’s ability to resist sudden pH changes. This is useful for community aquariums, planted tanks, shrimp systems, cichlid aquariums, source water testing, and any setup where buffering capacity affects livestock health and aquarium stability.
Freshwater Alkalinity Checker Features
- Measures freshwater alkalinity from 0 to 500 ppm as CaCO3.
- Digital reading removes guesswork from colour-chart comparison.
- 1 ppm resolution helps track freshwater buffering changes clearly.
- Compact handheld checker is easy to store and use for routine aquarium testing.
- One-button operation keeps the test process simple.
- Useful for checking aquarium water, tap water, and prepared water for freshwater systems.
- Uses a colorimetric method with a yellow to green to blue reaction range.
- Works with Hanna HI775-26 replacement reagents.

Freshwater Alkalinity Testing Notes
Alkalinity is not the same as pH, but it strongly affects how stable pH will be over time. Test aquarium and source water consistently, especially before making major buffering changes, adjusting CO2 use, or preparing water for sensitive freshwater species.
Using the Hanna Freshwater Alkalinity Checker
Zero the checker with the freshwater sample, add the alkalinity reagent as instructed, mix carefully, and read the alkalinity result on the display. Use clean cuvettes and replace reagents with Hanna HI775-26 as needed.
