Test Before You Dose

Adding supplements without testing is how most tanks drift out of balance. A test kit tells you what the water is actually short of, so you dose to a number rather than a hunch — and it's how you catch a stalled cycle or a nitrate creep before livestock show it.

Which Kit for Which Tank

• New setups — ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, to follow the cycle through to completion.
• Freshwater and planted — pH, GH and KH for general and carbonate hardness, plus phosphate and nitrate for algae control.
• Reef and marine — calcium, alkalinity and magnesium as the core three, with nitrate and phosphate for nutrient management.
• Master kits — several parameters bundled at a lower cost per test than buying individually.
• Test strips — quick approximate screening; use a liquid kit to confirm anything that looks off.
