Flow Is What Corals Actually Feel

A return pump moves water through the sump; powerheads and gyres move it around the display. Corals need varied, turbulent flow to shed detritus and feed properly, and dead spots are where cyanobacteria and detritus settle. Random or pulsing flow beats a constant jet aimed at the same rock.

Propeller, Gyre or Cross-Flow

  • Propeller powerheads — compact, high-output, controllable units for broad random flow.
  • Gyre pumps — a crossflow design that pushes a wide sheet of water down the tank's length.
  • Cross-flow pumps — a rolling flow pattern for even coverage in wider displays.
  • Nano and non-controllable pumps — simple fixed-output powerheads for small tanks and utility duty.
  • Spares — replacement wet sides, foam guards and mounts.
