Buy by Filter Model, Not by Look

Hang-on filter media is cut to fit a particular filter. An insert that is close but not exact leaves a gap for water to slip past, and the filter keeps running while doing far less than you think it is. Check the model number on the housing before ordering.

What Goes in the Basket

  • Foam and bio-foam inserts — mechanical trapping plus surface area for bacteria, usually the first stage in the basket.
  • Carbon inserts and carb cartridges — chemical filtration for discolouration, odours and residual medication.
  • Ceramic bio media inserts — durable biological media that houses the nitrifying colony.
  • Ammonia-removing inserts — for new setups and quarantine tanks where ammonia can spike.
  • All-in-one cartridges — combined floss and carbon pads for filters that take a single cartridge.
  • Intake strainer sponges — pre-filter sleeves that keep debris and small livestock out of the intake.

Stagger your media changes. Replacing every insert at once strips out the established bacteria along with the debris, so change mechanical foam and chemical media on different weeks, and rinse biological media in tank water rather than under the tap.
