Seachem Laboratories

Seachem Laboratories

Seachem remains as one of the few surviving independent and privately owned pet care companies. Seachem is owned and operated by hobbyists. All of our employees are hobbyists who maintain aquariums at home and at the office.

Seachem itself was started because one such hobbyist found the available solutions to aquarists’ problems wanting. This resulted in Seachem’s very first product: Cupraplex™ (today known as Cupramine™). Thirty years later Seachem is still approaching old problems in a new way. We offer truly innovative solutions that work better than competing products and save money through increased efficiency and concentration.

Clarity is the ultimate clarifier for both fresh and saltwater. It employs an advanced polymeric flocculating agent that is both reef and plant safe.Clarity is the only clarifier on the market that does it all! Clarity will clear all types of clouding including, but not limited to, chemical clouding and particulate clouding (i.e. stirred up gravel bed). Freshwater and Marine. Plant and reef safe. Many companies manufacture multiple products to clear up each type of cloudiness and each different environment (e.g. freshwater, marine, reef, etc.). Some companies have developed products that will clear most types of cloudiness, but their application requires two separate bottles of product. Clarity contains compounds that will clear all types of cloudiness in all environments. Clarity contains both precipitating and flocculating agents in the same bottle, enabling all types of cloudiness to be removed in one dose. Directions: Use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 80 L (20 gallons). In some situations the cloudiness may increase slightly after adding Clarity, however this is normal and is a sign that Clarity is actively working. Rapid clarification will follow. In the case of chemical or particulate clouding clean filter floss or cartridge after tanks clears.

    SeaChem Reef Calcium - 500ml

    1 review

    In Stock

Reef Calcium is a concentrated (50,000 mg/L) bioavailable polygluconate complexed calcium intended to maintain calcium in the reef aquarium without altering pH (formulated at pH 8.2).Polygluconate complexation confers several benefits: it increases the bioavailability of the calcium, it provides a rich source of metabolic energy to help maintain peak coral growth, and it inhibits calcium precipitation/alkalinity depletion. One side benefit includes enhancement of denitrification.Polygluconate contains no nitrogen or phosphorous, thus it is biologically impossible for it to lead to algae growth in a properly maintained reef system.Reef Calcium may be used alone to maintain calcium but will provide enhanced levels of coral growth when used in conjunction with an ionic calcium supplement (Reef Complete, Reef Advantage Calcium, Reef Kalkwasser).Reef Calcium is intended to maintain calcium levels; if calcium becomes seriously depleted one should either perform a water change or use an ionic calcium supplement to restore the depleted level of calcium. Each 100 mL treats up to 1,600 L (400 gallons).

    SeaChem Reef Carbonate - 500ml

    In Stock

Reef Carbonate is a concentrated (4,000 meq/L) optimized blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts designed to restore and maintain alkalinity in the reef aquarium.Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. To prevent this you must provide carbonates (Reef Carbonate) and calcium (Reef Advantage Calcium or Reef Complete). When used as directed, Reef Carbonate will not deplete calcium, magnesium, or strontium which usually tend to precipitate with increasing alkalinity. Reef alkalinity should be maintained at 3-5 meq/L (8-14 dKH). Alkalinity should not be allowed to fall below 2 meq/L.Whereas competing products simply use sodium bicarbonate, Reef Carbonate is made with a blend of carbonate and bicarbonate salts. This blend of salts results in Reef Carbonate yielding a pK of roughly 9.0 in saltwater (higher than competing products). In a closed reef system, the multitude of organics produced by reef inhabitants tends to force pH downward, but the advantage of Reef Carbonate's higher pK is a stabilization of pH around 8.3-8.4.Competing products' formulations make them incapable of such a claim, so pH will always fall below desirable levels for a reef aquarium.Reef Carbonate Directions

AmGuard safely, rapidly and efficiently removes toxic free ammonia. It is safe to use during tank cycling and is ideal for treating unexpected emergency situations. AmGuard reacts with free ammonia within minutes and does not alter pH. Ammonia can exist in two forms: free and ionized. It is only the free form that is toxic. Traditional ammonia test kits convert all ammonia to free ammonia by raising pH to 12-14; at this pH AmGuard cannot function and thus a false positive reading will result. Use Ammonia Alert or MultiTest: Free & Total Ammonia to directly monitor levels of free ammonia. AmGuard also removes chlorine and chloramines.

Seachem Neutral Regulator - 500 Gram

    In Stock

Neutral Regulator adjusts pH to neutral (pH 7.0) from either a low or high pH and maintains it there. It softens water by precipitating calcium and magnesium while removing any chlorine, chloramine, or ammonia. The use of Neutral Regulator makes other conditioning unnecessary. To lower pH below 7.0 use Neutral Regulator with Acid Regulator (or Discus Buffer). To raise pH above 7.0 use with Alkaline Regulator. All of these products will enhance and stabilize the freshwater aquarium environment. In addition to Neutral Regulator's superior buffering capacity, it will remove chlorine and chloramine, bind ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, stimulate slime coat production, and buffer the pH to 7.0. Directions: Use 1 level teaspoon for every 40-80 L (10-20 gallons*) once or twice a month (or as necessary to maintain a pH of 7.0.) Neutral Regulator may be added directly to the aquarium at any time. Ideally, it should be used when adding or changing water by dissolving in the replacement water.

  • Buy Seachem Tidal Power Filter (Model 55) in Canada Seachem Tidal Power Filter (Model 55)

Seachem Tidal Power Filter (Model 55)

    In Stock

Tidal Power Filters are designed from the ground up to provide your aquarium with high-quality, comprehensive filtration. They are easy to use and adaptable to a variety of aquarium conditions. With a host of features including a self-priming pump, dual water intake with surface skimmer, adjustable flow, maintenance monitor, self-cleaning impeller, and a filter basket that holds any kind of filtration media - and more of it.Tidal Power Filters are designed to deliver the highest water quality possible with maximum versatility and ease of use. They are suited to a wide variety of aquarium setups from saltwater to freshwater, ranging in size from 35 gallons to 110 gallons. All Tidal Filters have a 3 year warranty that can be extended to 5 years by registering your filter.Key Features Lid turns into a tray for the media basket when doing maintenance Maintenance monitor alerts you when to clean filter The large capacity design of the filter basket allows for any type of Seachem filter media, which can be interchanged and placed in custom configurations. All Tidal Filters come with Seachem's Matrix bio-media and a foam filter to get you started. Adjustable leveling device Adjustable intake flow Self-priming pump & self-cleaning impeller Optional heater holder The surface skimmer will capture the water from just below the surface, where excreted fish oils accumulate, and deeper in the tank removing floating debris Fully adjustable flow regulation adjusts performance to a specific aquarium volume, type, or provide an environment for fish which prefer more or less water movement or oxygenation. Innovative Design Ventilation slots in the lid of the filter and aeration grooves in the outflow ensure that water returned to the tank is fully oxygenated and maximize gas exchange during filtration. The pump pushes water up into the basket of the filter, entering through the bottom of the basket and being pushed out the top. A bottom-to-top flow ensures that water comes into contact will all filter media, and cannot go around or over filter media as with hang on back filters with a back-to-front flow. The pump is also insulated and silent, making it excellent for office or dining room aquariums, and has extremely low power consumption for the amount of output - the large Tidal 110 filter uses only 12 watts. Over time, filtration media can become clogged with detritus and prevent water from flowing through. When this happens in the Tidal Filter, water is redirected around the filter and back into the aquarium through an outlet to the side. When this happens, the redirected water pushes up the blue maintenance monitor on the top of the filter, letting the aquarium keeper know that the filter media needs to be cleaned out. The basket is designed with raised slots which catch detritus rather than allowing it to fall through back into the filter when flow is stopped. A heater can be attached to the side with an optional heater clip, allowing for better dispersal of heated water through the aquarium. Versatile The adjustable telescoping intake allows water to be taken from any level of the tank without the need to stop the filter or bother with spare parts. Dual Water Intake. The surface skimmer will capture the water from just below the surface, where excreted fish oils accumulate, and deeper in the tank removing floating debris. A dial on the side of the filter adjusts how much flow comes from the underwater intake versus the surface skimmer. The flow on the pump is adjustable using the dial on the front, from the powerful full flow rate of 450 gallons per hour on the Tidal 110 down to a gentle 90 gallons per hour on the same filter. Water recirculates within the filter, so turning the flow rate down will not wear the pump down or cause problems within the filter. The filter basket has a huge capacity to hold filtration media of your choice in the configuration of your choice (No cartridges A leveler on the base of the filter lets the filter adjust to a variety of aquarium styles. Easy to Use Self-priming pump means there is no need to fill the filter basket with water, start a siphon, monitor the filter, or any of the other headaches of starting a new filter. This also means that filter will restart itself with no trouble after a power outage or after maintenance. The self-cleaning, non-corrosive impeller suited for both saltwater and freshwater environments. This cuts down on maintenance and makes the filter suitable for a wide range of environments. The basket is fully removable and snaps into the lid of the filter for easy and drip-free transit to a sink or hose for cleaning The filter basket has a huge capacity to hold filtration media of your choice in the configuration of your choice (No cartridges). All Tidal Filters come with Seachem's Matrix bio-media to get you started. It will not raise pH above 8.3 even if inadvertently overdosed.Liquid Marine Buffer is a blended product and is not just sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate, commonly sold as a substitute. Such products can raise pH to dangerous levels if not used properly. Liquid Marine Buffer contains sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, and potassium salts of carbonate, bicarbonate, chloride, sulfate, and borate.Liquid Marine Buffer shares the same blend as Marine Buffer powder; thus, it confers the same benefits. It is a blended buffer that drives and holds your pH at 8.3 because of the blend. The pK of Liquid Marine Buffer is actually slightly higher than 8.3 in order to combat the influx of bicarbonate at every water change.Directions:Use 1 capful (5 ml) for every 20 L (5 gallons) daily until pH stabilizes at 8.3. (Note: The 2 & 4 L containerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cap is 10 mL). This may take from a day to a week depending on original pH, alkalinity and buffer system balance. Acid Buffer is a non-phosphate buffer to lower pH and buffer with Alkaline Buffer. Both buffers are designed for the planted aquarium or for very hard water where phosphate buffers may pose an algae or cloudiness problem.Acid Buffer lowers pH and buffers between 5.0 and 8.0 when used with Alkaline Buffer. As Acid Buffer lowers pH it converts carbonate alkalinity (KH) into available CO2. It may also be used to safely lower pH in marine water. What distinguishes Acid Buffer from other buffers is that it does not contain phosphates. This makes it ideal for the planted aquarium, where excess phosphate could contribute to undesirable algae growth.

  • Seachem Flourish Excel 250ml - front of bottle SeaChem Flourish Excel - 250ml back of bottle with instructions

    SeaChem Flourish Excel - 250ml

    In Stock

Seachem Flourish Excel - 250ml Flourish Excel is a source of bioavailable organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO2, but, may also be derived from simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). The use of either CO2 injection or Flourish Excel does not necessarily negate the use of the other. Because the processes of producing photosynthetic intermediates and building onto them occur simultaneously, one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel either alone or in conjunction with CO2 . The combination is particularly ideal for situations when continuing to add CO2 could result in dangerously low pH levels. Flourish Excel also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3). The reason plants need CO2 is to produce longer chain carbon compounds also known as photosynthetic intermediates. Photosynthetic intermediates includes compounds such as ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate, and 2-carboxy-3-keto-D-arabinitol 1,5 bisphosphate. Although the names are complicated, the structures are quite simple (5 carbon chains).Flourish Excel does not contain these specific compounds per se, but one that is quite similar. By dosing with Flourish Excel you bypass the involvement of CO2 and introduce the already finished, structurally similar compounds. It is in its structural similarity that Flourish Excel is able to be utilized in the carbon chain building process of photosynthesis. Simple chemical or enzymatic steps can easily convert it to any one to any one of the above named compounds (or a variety of others). How to Use Flourish Excel On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 gallons*). Thereafter use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 gallons*) daily or every other day. Dosing may be slowly increased in high-growth aquariums. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1mL.

SeaChem Reef Phytoplankton - 500 mL

    In Stock

Reef Phytoplankton is a concentrated blend of green and brown marine phytoplankton designed to provide the essential fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, amino acids, with biological carotenoids for invertebrate diet. Size ranges from 1-20 um to feed a broad range of tropical marine aquarium filter feeders and invertebrates. Reef Phytoplankton contains a natural source of carotenoids which provides essential proteins as well as a more bioavailable source of pigmentation when compared to other natural sources and synthetic pigments. Carotenoids provide the extra benefit of antioxidant activity. In addition, Reef Phytoplankton is enhanced to increase the bioavailability of important nutrients such as proteins, lipids, B vitamins, and other organic pigments, thus, corals expend less energy to derive the nutritional benefit. It is blended to contain the proper ratio of fatty acids, carbohydrates, and proteins. Blending phytoplankton yields better nutritional value. Studies show increased consumption of phytoplankton in filter feeders when using mixed cultures versus a single culture of phytoplankton.DirectionsShake well before using. Add 1 capful (5 mL) per 200 L (50 US gallons) of water twice weekly or as required to maintain coral growth. For best results, dose directly to aquarium; target feeding can overwhelm corals and have a negative impact. Refrigeration after opening is recommended, but not required.IngredientsIngredients: Water, Sodium chloride, Thalassiosira weissflogii, Acetic Acid, Isochrysis sp, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid, Nannochloropsis, Astaxanthin

SeaChem Reef Iodide - 500 mL

    In Stock

Seachem Reef Iodide - 500ml Iodide is an important element required by invertebrates and many soft corals (gorgonians, sarcophytons, etc). Reef Iodide is a concentrated (8,000 mg/L) stabilized potassium iodide source for reef aquaria that will restore and maintain iodide levels to those found in natural sea water. It is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions. Iodine is as toxic as chlorine and should never be used in a reef system. However, iodide is as safe as chloride. Most iodine supplements on the market are simply potassium iodide or a medicinal disinfectant commonly known as Lugol's Solution. Lugol's is a highly concentrated iodine/iodide solution that is highly toxic and intended for disinfection. Although such products are sold for use in reef aquaria, we believe the risks vastly outweigh the potential minor benefits. Reef Iodide is formulated to provide a safe source of iodide that will not convert to toxic free iodine under storage or reef conditions. Potassium iodide only products are a safer alternative but not very effective alone owing to the unstable nature of iodide in the aquarium environment. When added to an aquarium environment, iodide becomes unstable converting to elemental iodine (which is biocidal), iodate (which is useless to corals, toxic at elevated levels, and can't be tested for), and iodide which is the only form of iodine available to corals for uptake. These products' inherent instability makes them potentially dangerous to coral health. Unlike competing products, Reef Iodide is complexed to a stabilizing compound in order to keep it in the iodide form when added to the aquarium. All of the product remains usable and fully bio-available. Seachem Reef Iodide Features Stabilized potassium iodide source Safe and easy to use Important for soft tissue growth Dosing Seachem Reef Iodide Beginner Add 5 mL (1 capful) for each 200 L (US 50 gallons) every other day.Advanced Add 1 mL for each 80 L (20 US gallons) daily to raise iodide by 0.10 mg/L. If necessary, adjust amount so that iodide reads 0.06-0.08 mg/L 6-12 hours after the last amount. Thereafter, use this amount daily and check iodide twice a month.ExpertAfter determining the iodide consumption rate, set up a continuous drip system. Use the following formula (or skip the math and use our Dosage Calculator) to determine how much to add to your top-off water: m=0.125vi (m=mL of product to add to top off water, v=volume of tank in liters, i=amount to raise iodide in mg/L). For example, if you want to raise iodide by 0.10 mg/L in a 200 liter tank, then you would add 0.125x200x0.10=2.5 mL into the top-off water. [For reference: 1 gallon=3.8 L].

It does not contain harmful or unnecessary ingredients such as nitrates, phosphates, arsenic, lithium, or cadmium. Use SeaChemà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Cichlid Trace to restore and maintain important trace elements between water changesAlthough the major Rift Lakes contain basically the same mineral salts, they do so in greatly differing concentrations. Cichlid Lake Salt is formulated so that dosages vary depending on the lake of origin and need only be added when setting up an aquarium or with water changes. Many competing products are little more than combinations of Epsom salt and bicarbonate of soda. This will not provide a complete replication of the mineral salts that are contained in the lakes of Africa, in particular calcium and potassium.Directions: All doses given for 40 L (10 gallons*). TANGANYIKA: Use 11 g (1.5 teaspoons). MALAWI: Use 5.5 g (3/4 teaspoons). VICTORIA: Use 3.6 g (1/2 teaspoon). pH BUFFERING: SeaChem's Tanganyika Buffer (pH 9.0à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“9.4) and Malawi/Victoria Buffer (pH 7.8à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“8.4) should be used to adjust carbonate hardness and pH. TIPS: Use when setting up an aquarium and when making water changes. To add salt to an established tank, base dose on water being changed. Do not use salt when simply replacing evaporated water. It is best to dissolve the salt in freshwater before use.

    SeaChem Equilibrium - 4KG

    1 review

    In Stock

Equilibrium is specifically designed to establish the ideal mineral content for the planted aquarium.Equilibrium contains no sodium or chloride (which can be detrimental to a planted aquarium at elevated levels). Equilibrium is ideally suited for use with RO (reverse osmosis) or DI (deionized) water or any mineral deficient water. Equilibrium raises the essential mineral/electrolyte content (General Hardness) of the water to balance with and promote stability of the carbonate hardness. To maintain KH, we recommend Alkaline Buffer. Unlike competing products, Equilibrium contains NO SODIUM CHLORIDE. Both sodium and chloride are not rapidly depleted elements in a planted aquarium, and, in the case of chloride, can do more harm than good. Competitors' products generally contain primarily sodium chloride (because it is inexpensive), which will raise the electrolyte levels for fish, but can be detrimental to plant growth. In addition, sodium is not a contributing cation to GH levels. Equilibrium contains only calcium, magnesium, and potassium salts, which aid in fish metabolism, but are also highly beneficial to plant growth.Directions: To raise mineral content/general hardness (GH) by 1 meq/L (3 dH), add 16 g (1 tablespoon) for every 80 L (20 gallons*) when setting up an aquarium or when making water changes (add to new water). Equilibrium can be added straight, although for optimum solubility we recommend mixing with ~ 1 L (1 qt.) of water (the resulting mixture will have a white opaque appearance). When this mixture is added to the aquarium it will impart a slight haze that should clear within 15-30 minutes. HINTS: Do not use Equilibrium when replacing evaporated water. This dose is based on DI or RO water; for other water, measure hardness (GH) first, then add according to need. Plant preferences vary, but a general guide is about 1-2 meq/L (3-6 dH) or match the existing or target carbonate hardness (KH), which, ideally, is also about 1-2 meq/L (3-6 dKH).

Reef Advantage Calcium is equivalent to dry Reef Complete. It is a non-caustic (pH 8.3-8.6) optimized blend of ionic calcium designed to restore and maintain calcium levels found in natural seawater.Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. Reef Advantage Calcium also includes magnesium and strontium in amounts proportionate to typical utilization ratios (100:5:0.1, Ca:Mg:Sr). This allows one to maintain these two important elements while maintaining calcium.Unlike limewater (kalkwasser), Reef Advantage Calcium does not have a caustic pH and will not deplete magnesium. Used as directed, it will not deplete alkalinity.A 500 g bottle treats 16,000 L (4,000 gallons).
