Mechanical Filtration You Can Actually Remove

A filter sock catches detritus before it breaks down, and its whole value lies in being taken out and cleaned. Left in place, it stops being mechanical filtration and becomes a nutrient source sitting in the sump — which is why the honest advice is to buy several and rotate them.

Choosing a Sock

• Felt socks — 100 and 200 micron, the finer options for polishing water.
• Mesh socks — 225 and 250 micron, coarser, faster-draining and easier to rinse clean.
• Sizes — 4 inch and 7 inch collars in standard lengths, plus nano and rectangle formats.
• Media cups — swap the sock for a basket holding your choice of media.
• Sock holders and rings — mount and support the sock where the overflow drops in.
• Filter pad material — cut-to-fit sheet for sumps and hang-on filters.

Match the collar diameter to your holder first, then pick the micron rating. Finer socks polish better but clog faster; on a heavily fed system a 200 or 225 micron sock often runs longer between changes and does more real work than a 100 that blinds off in two days.
