Collection: Base Aquarium Rock

Base rock is the structure everything else in a reef sits on. This range covers dry aquascaping rock sold by the pound alongside pre-shaped arches, caves, donuts and branch pieces, boxed kits matched to common tank volumes, and a modular rod-and-base system for open, stable layouts. Buy by weight to build a full scape, or add single shapes to extend one you have already built.

Dry Rock, Shaped Pieces and Complete Kits

Base rock gives a reef its skeleton — the load-bearing structure corals are eventually mounted to, and the shape water has to move around. Dry rock arrives clean and free of hitchhikers, which is why most reefers now start with it and let the tank populate the rock over time rather than the other way round.

What You Will Find Here

  • Rock by the pound — 1lb through to 40lb quantities for scaping to a target weight.
  • Shaped pieces — arches, caves, donuts, trees and branch rock for overhangs and swim-throughs.
  • Boxed scape kits — packs matched to tank ranges from nano up to mid-size reefs.
  • Modular rod systems — drilled base pieces and rods that hold a structure together without epoxy.
  • Stone bonding kits — mortar for locking a finished scape in place.

Planning a Scape

Weight is the usual budgeting mistake. Dry rock is much lighter than the wet live rock the old pounds-per-gallon rules were written for, so plan by the look you want and the footprint of the tank instead. Dry-fit the whole structure outside the aquarium first, leave open sand at the front for flow and maintenance access, and bond the joints before anything goes near water.

J&L Aquatics was formed in December 1997

Our business was started from our love of the aquarium hobby. We at J&L Aquatics felt that the Canadian aquarist should have the option to purchase top quality supplies, equipment and livestock other than the generally over priced local retail stores.
