Hydros Wave Engine v2
The Hydros Wave Engine v2 is a multi-brand aquarium pump controller built to control, monitor, and power compatible flow pumps through the HYDROS app. It is designed for reef and saltwater aquariums where strong, coordinated water movement is critical for coral health, detritus suspension, gas exchange, nutrient export, and overall system stability. By bringing compatible pumps from different brands into one integrated flow-management platform, the Wave Engine v2 helps reduce separate pump controllers, bulky power supplies, duplicate apps, and messy cabinet wiring.
HYDROS Wave Engine v2 Aquarium Flow Controller Overview
The Wave Engine v2 is built for hobbyists who want more than basic on/off pump control. Instead of running each flow pump through its own controller and power brick, compatible pumps can be managed together through one HYDROS interface with coordinated schedules, operating modes, flow presets, pump grouping, power monitoring, and performance feedback. This is especially useful on reef aquariums where flow needs to change throughout the day for feeding, coral extension, detritus suspension, night operation, and water-change routines.
One of the biggest advantages of the Hydros Wave Engine v2 is its ability to unify different pump types into one control strategy. A system can use direct-drive pump control for supported pumps, 0-10V control for compatible external pump controllers, and HYDROS WiFi device control for additional modular equipment. This gives advanced aquarium owners more flexibility when mixing pump brands, upgrading existing flow equipment, or building a cleaner controller board around the HYDROS ecosystem.
Expanded Wave Engine v2 Pump Control Features
- Multi-brand pump control: The Wave Engine v2 is designed to control and monitor pumps from different manufacturers together, allowing compatible pumps to work as one coordinated flow system instead of several isolated devices with separate controllers and apps.
- Direct-drive pump operation: With the correct HYDROS Direct Drive Adapter cords, many compatible pumps can connect directly to the Wave Engine v2. This can eliminate the pump’s separate controller and power brick, helping clean up the aquarium stand and simplify the wiring layout.
- Power for up to four compatible pumps: The Wave Engine v2 can supply power to up to four compatible pumps when used with the proper adapters and compatible pump models. This makes it a strong choice for reef tanks with multiple flow pumps that need coordinated movement and cleaner power management.
- 0-10V pump-control support: For pumps that use external controllers with 0-10V input, the Wave Engine v2 can provide third-party control through the proper HYDROS 0-10V cable. This allows compatible pumps to use HYDROS schedules and flow management without being directly powered by the Wave Engine.
- Advanced flow presets: Built-in flow options include sync, anti-sync, triangle wave, square wave, sine wave, gyre, random, constant flow, and other preset wave patterns. These modes help create more natural and varied water movement than a single constant-speed pump setting.
- Custom flow pattern creation: The HYDROS app allows custom patterns and schedules so pump output can change through the day. This is useful for simulating reef-style flow cycles, reducing nighttime intensity, increasing daytime movement, or building specific patterns around coral placement and aquascape structure.
- Pump grouping and location control: Pumps can be assigned locations, grouped, and configured with minimum and maximum speed limits. This helps prevent excessive output on one side of the aquarium while allowing pumps to work together in a controlled pattern.
- Feed, water-change, and night modes: Operational modes can be used for common aquarium routines. Feed modes can calm flow while fish and corals feed, water-change modes can simplify maintenance, and night modes can reduce flow intensity during lower-activity periods.
- Power and performance monitoring: The Wave Engine v2 can monitor power consumption including volts, amps, and watts for connected pumps, as well as total consumption across attached pumps. It can also monitor pump RPM to help identify reduced performance or maintenance concerns.
- Real-time alerts and notifications: HYDROS notifications can alert the user to system status and pump performance issues. This is valuable when a pump is blocked, disconnected, dirty, or no longer performing as expected.
- Control up to eight HYDROS WiFi devices: The Wave Engine v2 can also control up to eight compatible HYDROS WiFi devices, allowing additional modular control for equipment such as lights, pumps, feeders, smart plugs, and WiFi power strips.
- HYDROS Collective integration: Command Bus connectivity allows the Wave Engine v2 to connect with other HYDROS controllers so devices can communicate and work together. This helps build a broader aquarium automation system with shared status, control logic, and cleaner equipment management.

Setting Up Your HYDROS Wave Engine v2
Install the HYDROS app, connect the Wave Engine v2, and add compatible pumps using the correct direct-drive adapters or 0-10V control cables. Configure each pump by model, location, speed range, group, schedule, and operating mode before relying on the system for daily flow control. Mount the controller in a protected dry location, route cables cleanly, and use drip loops on all cords around the aquarium stand or sump area.
Wave Engine v2 Compatibility and Application Notes
Compatible pump control depends on the exact pump model and connection method. Direct-drive adapters and 0-10V cables are sold separately and should be selected based on the pump being connected. Manufacturer-listed direct-drive examples include Maxspect Gyre, IceCap Gyre, Reef Octopus OCTO Pulse, Reef Octopus VarioS, and select Reef Octopus RODC pumps, while 0-10V examples include compatible Tunze, Abyzz, and Reef Octopus pumps. Maxspect Gyre 280 pumps are limited to 75% maximum intensity. Always confirm current HYDROS pump compatibility before connecting equipment.
