The Hanna Ammonia Checker - Marine HI784 is a handheld colorimeter designed for measuring ammonia in saltwater aquariums from 0.00 to 2.50 ppm NH3. It gives a digital result for marine aquarists who need clearer ammonia readings than standard colour-matching kits can provide.
HI784 Marine Ammonia Testing
Ammonia can be dangerous in saltwater aquariums, especially in new systems, quarantine tanks, shipping stress situations, emergency holding systems, and aquariums with biological filtration disruption. The HI784 is designed for marine samples and uses a salicylate method suited to saltwater testing.
Marine Ammonia Checker Features
- Measures marine ammonia from 0.00 to 2.50 ppm NH3.
- Digital display reduces visual interpretation errors from colour charts.
- 0.01 ppm resolution helps monitor low-level ammonia changes.
- Designed specifically for saltwater aquarium samples.
- Uses an adaptation of the salicylate method, where ammonia and ammonium reaction creates a blue-green tint.
- Compact handheld checker is convenient for aquarium maintenance and emergency testing.
- Auto shut-off helps preserve battery life.
- Works with Hanna HI784-25 replacement reagents.

Marine Ammonia Testing Notes
Keep the prepared sample within Hanna’s stated temperature range and test saltwater samples only. Ammonia readings should be considered alongside pH, temperature, livestock behaviour, and system history, especially in quarantine or newly established marine aquariums.
Using the Hanna Marine Ammonia Checker
Prepare the sample with the HI784 reagents as directed, keep the cuvettes clean and dry on the outside, and read the result on the checker display. Use Hanna HI784-25 replacement reagents when the starter reagents are finished.
