What Carbon Removes, and What It Doesn't

Activated carbon pulls dissolved organics out of the water — the compounds behind yellowing, odour and much of the chemical warfare between corals. It does not remove ammonia, nitrate or phosphate, so it complements biological and nutrient control rather than replacing them.

Choosing and Running Carbon

• Bulk activated carbon — economical for reactors and larger systems, in sizes from a few hundred grams up to bulk sacks.
• ROX 0.8 pelletised carbon — a denser, low-dust grade favoured for reef systems.
• Blended resin-and-carbon media — combined organic removal and resin filtration in a single pre-packed unit.
• Nano and pre-bagged options — sized for small tanks and all-in-one filter chambers.

Rinse carbon before use to clear the dust, run it in a bag or reactor with moderate flow, and replace it every few weeks — exhausted carbon stops adsorbing rather than releasing what it caught. Introduce it gradually in a reef that has gone without. Questions? Email info@jlaquatics.com.
